Miniature March (2014)

Commissioned by the Oregon Bach Festival Composers Symposium; premiered by members of Beta Collide

“Miniature March” was written for the Oregon Bach Festival Composers Symposium and premiered by myself and members of the Oregon ensemble Beta Collide. I had only two weeks to write the piece, so I had to stick to what I know how to do stylistically and what I can write relatively fast. The instrumentation seemed to lend itself to something fast and boisterous, and what ended up resulting was a sort of march in ABA form with a contrasting, slower B section.

Rachel Beetz, flute
Clare Glackin, oboe
Brian McWhorter, trumpet
Idit Shner, alto saxophone

Miniature March (2015) – saxophone quartet

“Miniature March” is a saxophone quartet transcription of a piece originally written in summer 2013 for flute, oboe, trumpet and alto saxophone. The original version was written for the Oregon Bach Festival Composers Symposium and premiered by myself and members of the Oregon ensemble Beta Collide. I had only two weeks to write the piece, so I had to stick to what I know how to do stylistically and what I can write relatively fast. The instrumentation seemed to lend itself to something fast and boisterous, and what ended up resulting was a sort of march in ABA form with a contrasting, slower B section. After the premiere of the piece, I realized that this music would translate well to the medium of sax quartet.
